BBB Urges Caution with Door-to-Door Contractors
(Lexington, KY) – Area homeowners have been calling the Better Business Bureau serving Central & Eastern Kentucky about traveling contractors knocking on their doors offering on-the-spot paving and seal coating for unbelievably low prices…and leaving shoddy work behind with no response to calls to come back and finish or make it right.
The BBB has received calls in particular about a company using the names "Pave Rite" and "Pave Pro" owned by a man identifying himself as George Hemphill. Central Kentucky homeowners have reported hiring Mr. Hemphill after being quoted one price and later, being charged much more. The homeowners, one a senior citizen, paid him anyway for jobs that remained unfinished and poorly done. Their calls to Mr. Hemphill to return and finish or repair the job went unanswered.
To make matters worse, the address one homeowner was given for the business was "1492 Columbus Way" in Lexington, KY. There is no such address; BBB complaint mail to the business was returned as undeliverable. BBB calls to the phone number given went unanswered. In addition, BBB investigations revealed news stories about similar activities in Tennessee by other paving companies owned by a George Hemphill.
Other callers to the BBB have reported unsolicited visits to their homes by Pave Rite and other companies, offering cheap paving jobs because they had "material left over from working another job in the area." This scheme is common in warm weather months. Homeowners have historically had to pay a reputable company more money to fix sub-standard work. BBB warns using extreme caution before hiring door-to-door contractors:
Get complete information on the business, including name, address and phone number of the company.
Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau at (859) 259-1008 or www.bluegrass.bbb.org. If the business is from out of state, call BBB or check www.bbb.org.
Ask to see proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance before allowing any contractor to do home improvements on your property. Some counties require licensing.
If the company is from out of town or out of state, ask how any warranty work will be satisfied if there is a problem in the future.
If answers to any of your questions are vague, or no paperwork/insurance is shown, say goodbye, no matter how "friendly" they seem.
If you really need work done, get several estimates from businesses you have checked out. Better yet, get a list of BBB Accredited Businesses in the industry you need to use for comparison shopping. These businesses all meet BBB's strict standards and have promised to respond to customer complaints.
