Fake Online GED Scam
|
| 2010-11-02 |
If you learn you need a high school diploma or need to have passed the General Educational Development test (GED) in order to get or keep a job, or to go on to college, there are some websites out there promising they can help you...but many are scams you should not fall for.
The latest one a consumer has asked your Better Business Bureau about is one called Nation High School. For about $200, they told her they would send her son a high school diploma after a short test.
We checked the company's BBB report. The North Carolina BBB gives the company an "F" rating due to unanswered complaints.
Your BBB took a closer look at the website, which has lots of red flags.
First, the page they ask for your personal information on is NOT secure, despite what they say.
Second, NOWHERE on the site does the company list any addresses or locations. A legitimate organization would.
Third, in the microscopic print, is the statement that YOU must determine whether or not what you get from them will even be accepted at the college or job you need it for...and most likely it won't be.
We also checked on BetterWhoIs.com, a website to search where a website is registered....a search shows Nation High School is registered in the Cayman Islands.
If you need a GED, you can't just get it online for a couple hundred bucks and a few test questions. It takes time to study and several hours for the test. Contact your local board of education for information. If you see an offer like this for a diploma or GED online, don't fall for it!
