BBB urges consumers to make sure verbal promises are in contract
(Lexington, KY) – Central Kentucky residents are reporting visits by door-to-door salespeople offering great deals on satellite television …but Better Business Bureau serving Central & Eastern Kentucky warns that customers should be wary of any seller's verbal promises to cancel existing service and pay early termination fees.
Residents report being solicited by sellers representing "Dish One" out of Provo, Utah. Several residents say when they hesitate to take the offer due to expensive termination fees of their current satellite TV contract, some sellers have stated they would contact the current provider to cancel for the customer, and/or pay off fees for them. These customers later learned that was not true and were stuck with paying off the early termination fees, which can be as high as $200 or more. Others thought the Dish One representative had cancelled the service for them, only to find that did not occur. The customers continued to be billed by their current provider in addition to the service purchased from Dish One.
According to the BBB in Utah, the company has similar complaints on file. Dish One is responsive to complaints and resolved some of them to the consumers' satisfaction; others are in the process of being resolved.
BBB has obtained a copy of the contract that customers are given to sign. The contract does contain a checklist of items for the customer to review and initial, one of which states "Customer must cancel current provider." Nothing on the contract states anything about any termination fees being covered by the company.
"This is an excellent opportunity to remind consumers to very carefully read any contracts offered for them to sign, and make certain that any verbal promises are reflected," said Heather Clary, BBB Director of Communications. "This goes for any service a consumer is signing for. If it isn't in writing, there is no guarantee you'll get what a salesperson may have promised."
