BBB Releases Top 10 Areas of Complaint & Inquiry in 2010

(January 18, 2011) – In 2010, the home builder/remodeler/repair industry continued to hold the number one spots on the lists of industries consumers complained about and inquired about within the 64-county service area of the Better Business Bureau of Central & Eastern Kentucky.
"Consumers spend a great deal of money buying and keeping up a home, so it is no surprise that home improvement contractors brought the largest number of folks checking them out before hiring," said Jack Frank, President & CEO of the BBB of Central & Eastern Kentucky. "And when people are spending so much money on their homes, it usually follows that there are some who have problems with various contractors and need to file complaints to try and get their problem resolved."
Frank pointed out that most businesses are cooperative in resolving complaints, which occur in any industry. "It's the companies that don't want to make the effort to present their side of things and try to resolve a problem with a customer that people need to be aware of, which is why we encourage people to start with trust and check out these businesses with the BBB."
Many of the same industries stayed on the most-complained about list, but changed positions. (The asterisk, *, – indicates categories that have appeared on the top ten list in the past, but fell off the list in 2009.)

In 2010, the types of businesses receiving the most inquiries from consumers before hiring
were similar to the busiest inquiry areas in 2009. However, there were two newcomers to the top 10 most-inquired about industry list: real estate businesses and gunsmiths.

The BBB also continued to provide free referral lists of BBB Accredited Businesses in categories consumers requested. "Consumers want to use reputable companies that have a proven track record in committing to ethical business practices and that qualified to become BBB Accredited," Frank said.
