Phishing Scam Uses Legit Bank Name

9/2/2009

Lexington, KY - Your e-mail box can be a very useful tool, but also an unwitting accomplice in stealing your identity. Here is yet another email scam that attempts to steal your money, too.

Many of us do our banking, bill paying and credit card payments on the Internet. It's popular, convenient and safe. The con artists know this so they are trying to lure you into their scam using your e-mail box through "phishing" scams.

The latest one to hit an email box at your Better Business Bureau looks like it comes from Chase, a well-known financial institution. It even has the Chase logo.

The e-mail says that some new security measures are requiring all Chase bank customers to complete a form with your information. It provides a link to get to that form.

So far it seems legitimate….but it's NOT.

When you click on the link, it shows a form asking for your name, email address, credit or debit account numbers, PINs, the whole thing. This is not real.

First, if you look at the URL box at the top….there is NO "s" after the http…which is always there on a secure website. This indicates the site is not secure and is not being operated by Chase.

Secondly, the real website for Chase has warnings about phishing scams that try to fool you into giving your personal information to scam artist. Your financial institutions would not ask you to enter personal information into an email they sent, and you should not trust links that supposedly take you to a form to fill out. If you get a phishing scam like this one, don't fall for it!
